Morning Briefing: Mnuchin hits Davos seeking bang for the buck

Highlights

The mantra may be America First, but Steven Mnuchin doesn’t mind if the U.S. dollar isn’t so strong. The U.S. Treasury Secretary and his White House compatriots launched a major investment push on the eve of President Donald Trump’s arrival here.

French President Emmanual Macron and German Prime Minister Angela Merkel are both expected to speak today. It’ll be interesting to see how they position themselves ahead of Trump’s Friday appearance.

How does Scott Minerd, the chief investment officer at influential Guggenheim Partners, use Davos? Increasingly, it’s as a contra-indicator. This year, he says the widespread optimism about economic growth is so “disturbingly high” he worries it could lead to a “mania” in stock markets.

Has the U.S. fallen asleep on the potential of Africa? The head of the African Development Bank says that, looking beyond the “shithole” rhetoric, big investments on the continent from China, Japan and South Korea there should get America’s attention.
