A Reuters investigation has revealed glaring gaps in the protection that U.S. law enforcement provides the administrators of American democracy amid a sustained campaign of intimidation against election officials and staff. The unprecedented torrent of terroristic threats began after President Donald Trump lost the November election and continues today.

Governor Greg Abbott made Texas the latest U.S. state to impose Republican-backed voting restrictions, signing a law that was swiftly challenged in court and criticized by President Joe Biden as part of an "all-out assault" on American democracy.

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Michigan state lawmaker Steve Carra's bid to unseat Representative Fred Upton, his third endorsement of a challenger to a Republican who voted to impeach him on a charge of sparking the Capitol riot.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes goes on trial today in federal court, with prosecutors poised to lay out fraud charges against the former Silicon Valley star accused of lying about her now-defunct blood-testing startup once valued at $9 billion.

Jamie Spears, the father of Britney Spears, asked a Los Angeles court to end the pop singer's 13-year conservatorship, saying circumstances have changed in recent months.

Bitcoin licked its wounds, a day after its heaviest losses in 2-1/2 months as El Salvador's historic adoption of the crypto asset as legal tender caused chaos online and on the street. Meanwhile, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has threatened to sue Coinbase Global if the crypto exchange goes ahead with plans to launch a program allowing users to earn interest by lending crypto assets.

U.S. payments giant PayPal said it would acquire Japanese buy now, pay later firm Paidy in a $2.7 billion largely cash deal, taking another step to claim the top spot in an industry experiencing a pandemic-led boom.

Ryanair is willing to wait years for Boeing to drop its prices before placing a big new plane order with the U.S. firm, Chief Executive Michael O'Leary told Reuters, while he also downplayed the chance of a deal with rival Airbus. The Irish airline, one of Boeing's biggest customers, has ended talks over a new order of 737 MAX 10 jets worth tens of billions of dollars.

Apple says it will hold a special event on September 14, which most industry watchers believe will be used to unveil a new line of its flagship iPhones.

For Biden to be true to his agenda he should not renominate Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve chair, Nobel prize-winning economist and longtime Democratic adviser Joseph Stiglitz said in an interview that laid out the case for a remake of the Fed's leadership.
