India will make its second attempt to land on the moon later today, a mission seen as crucial to lunar exploration and the country's standing as a space power. The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft will attempt to land on the lunar south pole less than a week after a similar Russian lander crashed. Here's our explainer.

Eight Republican presidential contenders will take part in the party's first debate of the 2024 race in the hopes of emerging as a viable alternative to front-runner Donald Trump, who is expected to cast a long shadow over an event he plans to skip. Instead, he sat for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
The first of Trump's co-defendants in Georgia's criminal case accusing the former US president and his associates of subverting his 2020 election loss surrendered at an Atlanta jail. Trump's former lawyer John Eastman and Republican poll watcher Scott Hall both surrendered to the county sheriff's office.
Hollywood studios and streaming services released the terms of a revised proposal to striking writers, but the union urged members to continue picketing as the new offer failed to address all their concerns. Writers walked off the job on May 2, and were later joined by actors, halting productions across Hollywood.

Japan expects a "significant" impact from seafood import ban by Hong Kong and Macau due to the upcoming release of water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. Meanwhile, South Korea's majority opposition party and civic groups stepped up protests against the Tokyo Electric Power Company's plans.
Euro zone business activity declined far more than thought in August with the slide in Germany particularly fast, while some inflationary pressures returned. Today's purchasing managers' indexes complicate matters for the ECB which wants to control still rampant price rises without causing a recession.

How Russia keeps its fleet of Western jets in the air

Despite Western sanctions designed to stop Russian carriers from procuring parts for their Airbus and Boeing jets, Ural Airlines has imported over 20 of the US-made devices since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, customs records show.

All told, at least $1.2 billion worth of aircraft parts flowed to Russian airlines from May last year - when most US and European trade curbs and export bans were in force - to the end of June this year, a Reuters analysis shows.
