ISRAEL AND HAMAS AT WAR

Israeli forces pounded areas in northern and southern Gaza today after the Palestinian militant group Hamas said it had received and was studying a new proposal for a ceasefire and release of hostages in Gaza. The proposal appeared to be the most serious peace initiative for months in the Israel-Hamas war.
On Tuesday, Israeli commandos disguised as medical workers and Muslim women burst into a hospital in the occupied West Bank and killed three Palestinian militants. We look at the CCTV footage frame by frame. Bureau Chief James Mackenzie talks about the raid on today's Reuters World News podcast.

A Pakistani anti-graft court jailed Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan for 14 years each on charges of illegally selling state gifts, his party said, the third conviction for Khan in the last few months. We have an explainer on the embattled former prime minister.
An Indian state ruled by Narendra Modi's party is set to introduce contentious new common personal laws that will apply across religions next week, a template other state officials say they will look to follow. The move comes ahead of Modi's bid to win a rare third term in general elections to be held by May.
Russian anti-war candidate Boris Nadezhdin said he had submitted 105,000 signatures of support to the Central Election Commission, technically enough to challenge Vladimir Putin in the next election. Meanwhile, the Russian parliament backed confiscating property of anyone spreading "fake news" about the army.

US Federal Reserve officials are expected to maintain rates at between 5.25% and 5.5%, where they have been since July. They must also take stock of inflation that ended 2023 in much better shape than anticipated at the start of the year, the main reason why lower interest rates are now under consideration.
A Delaware judge tossed out Elon Musk's record-breaking $56 billion Tesla pay package, calling the compensation granted by the EV maker's board "an unfathomable sum" that was unfair to shareholders. The ruling, which can be appealed, nullifies the largest pay package in corporate America.
H&M's CEO Helena Helmersson unexpectedly quit, and company veteran Daniel Ervér took over with immediate effect. The leadership change came as H&M said sales for December and January fell by 4% compared to the previous year, a bad sign for the key Christmas shopping period.
Mitsuko Tottori's appointment as Japan Airlines' next president makes her something of a rarity in Japan - a female head of a well-known company. While Japanese firms have rapidly lifted the number of female board members in recent years, most are outside directors. Change from within is slower in coming.

The logistics of war

The US and its allies are increasingly worried that Chinese President Xi Jinping could order his military to seize Taiwan, the democratically-governed island China considers its own territory. So, the US military is taking a hard look at its own readiness and trying to play catch-up in a critical area: its logistics network.
