The administration also kicked off an immigration crackdown, tasking the military with aiding border security, issuing a broad ban on asylum and taking steps to restrict citizenship for children born on US soil. The dollar rebounded sharply after plunging hours earlier as Trump's first day back in the US presidency brought mixed messaging on tariffs and highlighted investors' sensitivity to headlines about trade policy. Trump did not immediately impose tariffs as previously promised but said he was thinking about imposing 25% duties on imports from Canada and Mexico on Feb. 1 over illegal immigrants and fentanyl crossing into the US. China broke its own records for new wind and solar power installations again last year, official data showed, accelerating from a breakneck pace set in 2023 as the country looks to peak its carbon emissions before 2030. The new US president also signed an executive order seeking to delay by 75 days the enforcement of a ban of popular short-video app TikTok that was slated to be shuttered on Jan. 19.
