Today's Top News   The jailing of Istanbul's mayor sparks the country's biggest protests in more than a decade. REUTERS/Umit Bektas Turkey protests A Turkish court jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, pending trial on corruption charges in a move that inflamed the country. Turkish authorities have detained nine journalists who covered overnight protests, the Journalists Union of Turkey said. South Korea's Constitutional Court reinstated Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to the post of acting president, striking down his impeachment as he pledged to focus on steering Asia's fourth-biggest economy through a US "trade war". The US Supreme Court is set to hear a bid by Louisiana officials and civil rights groups to preserve an electoral map that raised the number of Black-majority congressional districts in the state and prompted a challenge by non-Black voters. New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a snap election for April 28, saying he needed a strong mandate to deal with the threat posed by US President Donald Trump, who "wants to break us so America can own us." Greenlandic leaders have criticised a planned trip this week by a high-profile US delegation to the semi-autonomous Danish territory that Trump has suggested the US should annex. Tuberculosis infections among children in the European region rose 10% in 2023, indicating ongoing transmission and the need for immediate public health measures to control the spread, the World Health Organization said. Analysts are turning more cautious on US corporate earnings for the first quarter of this year, with the Trump administration's policies threatening to trigger a global trade war that could undermine economic growth. Genetic testing firm 23andMe said it filed for filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US to help the $50 million company sell itself and that co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki had resigned after multiple failed takeover bids. The US has almost doubled imports of Brazilian eggs once used only for pet food and is considering relaxing regulations for eggs laid by chickens raised for meat, as Trump's administration seeks to bring down sky-high prices spiked by bird flu. The Bank of Japan's meeting last week passed with no surprises, but for a careful BOJ watcher its message on the need to remain vigilant on food-driven inflationary pressures had an important takeaway: Rates could be raised sooner than expected. But after watching Trump's explosive meeting with Zelenskiy in the White House, he called it off. "When I saw this meeting, I told myself, 'I'm never going to go to the United States as long as Mr. Trump is the President there,'" Brask told Reuters.
