Beijing and Moscow helped Iran build up its military arsenal, but these longtime partners have offered little more than words of concern since US-Israeli strikes began last weekend, killing its supreme leader. Russia's war on Ukraine and China's dependence on Gulf energy and trade led them to conclude that intervening in the conflict would be too high a price to pay, according to analysts. There may even be benefits for the two major powers: oil shocks in the Middle East increase the price of Russian crude, while China gains new insight into current US military capabilities in the event of any future incursion into Taiwan. |
