NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. private employers shed 23,000 jobs in March, missing expectations for an increase in jobs although fewer than the adjusted 24,000 jobs lost in February, a report by a private employment service said on Wednesday.

Rite Aid loss, forecast worse than expected

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rite Aid Corp posted a worse-than-expected quarterly loss on weak sales from a mild winter cold and flu season, and lower profits on generic drugs and reimbursement rates. It was the drugstore chain's 11th straight quarterly loss.

Macarthur Coal rejects Peabody $3 billion bid

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia's Macarthur Coal rejected a $3 billion bid from U.S. miner Peabody Energy, saying it undervalued the growth prospects of a company which controls a third of the world's supply of a cleaner coal coveted by steelmakers.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union regulators gave Ireland provisional approval on Wednesday to provide an emergency recapitalization worth up to 10.44 billion euros ($14 billion) to Anglo Irish Bank .

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Manhattan federal judge dismissed a shareholder lawsuit accusing current and former American International Group Inc executives and directors of ignoring "red flags," leading to the insurer's near collapse and about $180 billion of federal bailouts.

Home loan demand up as purchase activity gains
